HIV and AIDS is a major health issue in Cambodia, which has one of the highest infection rates in Asia. Given FDCC is caring for orphaned children whose parents may be victims of the disease, there is a strong possibility that an adopted child will be HIV positive. Therefore, a major priority for FDCC was implementing a policy program for the care of any child with HIV.
FDCC has a policy that it will not discriminate against children with HIV. Indeed, discrimination against people with HIV is illegal in Cambodia and all schools are required to accept HIV positive children. The Cambodian Government advocates integration and home based care for anyone with HIV.
FDCC has implemented a mandatory HIV testing policy for children accepted into Mekhala House. This testing is undertaken by the Nek Leung Hospital, which is a highly reputable organisation with rigorous testing safeguards. FDCC can be confident that its testing results have the highest possible level of accuracy.
To assist us with providing the care required by any child found to have HIV, FDCC has developed an agreement with New Hope for Cambodian Children (NHCC). NHCC is a recognised experienced provider of a range of care services for HIV positive children and orphans in Cambodia. FDCC and NHCC will co-operate to design and provide the required HIV services.
